Galileo Living Lab Prize

The Galileo Living Lab Prize is looking for developers and users to submit proposals for GNSS-related products and services that are ready to be tested and ideally implemented in a suitable Living Lab.

The Challenge

Living Labs are User Driven Open Innovation Platforms where stakeholders have formed a Public-Private-People-Partnership (PPPP) of firms, public agencies, universities, institutes and users all collaborating for creating, prototyping, and validating new service-products and societal infrastructures in real-life contexts. Currently over 150 Living Labs are grouped under the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL).

Initiated in line with the FP7 project GAINS (Galileo Advanced INnovation Services) this dedicated Galileo Living Lab prototyping prize, aims at facilitating the emergence of User Driven Open Innovation Demand for services and applications enabled by satellite navigation technologies. The Galileo Living Lab Prize will award two winners. One per partnering Living Lab.

Rewards 2021

Usability

The LUTIN winner receives usability and technical (e.g. eye-tracking devices, ergonomics techniques) feedback on the user experience and behaviour of its prototype

Market Access

The LUTIN winner receives market access support from scientific and professional experts (ergonomics, cognitive sciences, computer sciences and information technologies, cognitive psychology, anthropology, social sciences fields)

Technology and Product Validation

DSLL rewards its winner with the opportunity to conduct a Living Lab technology and product validation trial with relevant user communities and potential future customers

Incubation Support Package

The DSLL winner will receive an incubation and support package tailored to their needs, product development stage and roadmap

Space Awards

The LUTIN and DSLL winner will benefit from a free trip to the Awards Ceremony 2021

Evaluation Criteria

The Galileo Living Lab Prize calls for developers and users to submit proposals for GNSS-related products and services that are ready to be tested and ideally implemented in a suitable Living Lab.

To compete for the GNSS Living Lab Prize, participants must have a prototype available, as a set of finalists will be invited to demonstrate their working prototypes to a panel of experts.

Furthermore, all those who enter to win this prize will need to point out how their product or service will benefit from user validation in a Living Lab.

Eligibility

To participate, any applicant must be a natural or a legal person of an EU Member State or European Economic Area (EEA), European Neighbouring Countries (ENP), South/East countries or other countries with which the EU has space dialogues and cooperation: USA, Canada, Latin America, Africa, Gulf Cooperation Countries, Kazahstan, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand.

About Integrative Usage Lab (IUL LUTIN)

The Laboratoire des Usages des Techniques d’Information Numériques (LUTIN) is a Federation of Research (FED 4246) and a Living Lab located at the City of Science and Industry in Paris, La Villette (Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie), which forms Universcience with the Palais de la Découverte.

LUTIN is a Living Lab platform for usability observations and experiments. LUTIN houses most of the analytical equipment required for its work. It thus provides access to various shared equipment for data collection such as eye-tracking systems, evoked potentials systems, physiological recording systems, video recording and analysis, with citizen participants for observations and with technologies for observation and experimentation, cognitive simulation, and with collaboration between disciplines and links with industries; LUTIN has close relationships with industries, and professional teams and users.

LUTIN offers services and advice for the adequate conception and use of information technologies. Its main activities concern knowledge technologies (web tools for topologies, web trails analysis, virtual class tools, e-learning, serious gaming, etc.), usability testing with an observational approach, both at the userlab level and in the real environment of work or life (usability and acceptability). For this purpose, LUTIN is partnering with several academies, museums (Universcience), universities, institutions and associations for well-being and ageing, etc.

LUTIN is also developing metrics to check to what extent a given interactive content matches the cognitive abilities of the users as well as techniques to automatically valuate how much a given answer matches the correct one.

About Digital Spaces Living Lab

Digital Spaces Living Lab (DSLL) is one of leading living labs in Europe. It was founded in 2008 in Sofia, Bulgaria. DSLL has taken part in many research, innovation, and industrial projects in Europe and has carried out numerous large-scale technology validation trials for clients all over the world in the last 12 years. The focus of the living lab is on digital media technologies, smart city services, mobile apps, wearables, apps and gadgets for museums, games, etc. DSLL has won several Open Call Living Lab competitions in Europe and has supported and incubated many of the winners/finalists of past GNSS Living Lab Prize competitions (see Hall of Fame), including Sawcer (Spain), cleanSpot (Spain), Safety Truck (UK), PPP WizLite (France), GoWalk (UK), TagStory (Norway), Ampido (Germany), SellNews (Germany), Vamos (Germany), and Geo-Coupon (Taiwan). In the last 2 years, DSLL was one of the key consortium partners in the WEAR Sustain EUR 3 million project, funded by the EC to support the wearables and smart textiles industry in Europe. Wear Sustain selected, funded and incubated 46 projects in two Open Calls.

As co-founder of Smart Fab Lab (the first fab lab in Bulgaria), DSLL provides the ability to design and create both hardware and software prototypes, rapidly test with real users in living lab trials and then further improve them back in the fab lab. In addition, DSLL can offer some of its members’ services and other platforms to test the feasibility of winning ideas of the Galileo Living Lab prize competition.
